About Oktoberfest at Des Moines Biergarten
Oktoberfest at Des Moines Biergarten is a free, three-day celebration of community, culture, and German-inspired fun — all set in the heart of Water Works Park. Running September 19–21, 2025, the event blends traditional Oktoberfest elements with the Biergarten’s signature vibe near downtown Des Moines.
Expect live music, classic Oktoberfest competitions, a wide variety of German and local food vendors, and, of course, plenty of bier. The weekend includes signature moments like the Golden Keg Bicycle Ride from the Iowa State Capitol, the ceremonial Tapping of the Golden Keg with Mayor Connie Boesen, and Barktoberfest, a dog adoption event in partnership with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
The festival takes place at the Des Moines Biergarten’s tree-covered home in Water Works Park and is designed to be family- and dog-friendly, with activities, games, and plenty of space to spread out and stay a while. Admission is free, and limited-edition stein glasses will be available for purchase while supplies last.
A portion of event proceeds will support the Water Works Park Foundation, helping to maintain and activate one of Des Moines' most beloved public spaces.
